Student Reflections on Identity Abroad: Elise Kerns

Since returning home from my study abroad experience in Edinburgh, Scotland people have frequently asked me the same few surface level questions. What was it like? Did I have a good time? Am I glad to be home? It was good, I had a blast, and yes it’s nice to be back in the US. But people rarely ask me about the difficulties of studying abroad, and even more seldom ask how the experience changed me.

International Student and Scholar Services is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2016 International Parents of the Year award: Dr. Khalid Joudi and Dr. Maysoon Yasin. They are the parents of recent University of Iowa grad Dr. Kawther Khalid Ahmed, who just received her Ph.D. in pharmaceutics in August. Dr. Ahmed is now a post-doctoral scholar here at the University of Iowa while her husband, Ali Al-Jumaili, finishes his own program. They have two daughters and a little boy here with them in Iowa City.

Aubree Compton, senior study abroad advisor and program coordinator at the University of Iowa, recently received her professional certification in education abroad. She is the first individual to successfully complete the program in Iowa, the Big Ten conference, and 19th overall.

Being in CIEE’s Santiago de Chile program has been an extraordinary and seemingly-existential experience thus far.  I’m having a wonderful time, my host family is so nice and so supportive—I couldn’t imagine a better housing arrangement—my classes are so interesting and thought-provoking, and Santiago (well… Chile, itself, really) is full of unexpected adventures.

Seated in the living room of my apartment, 23 stories above the ground, I am watching shapes of light dancing in random movements on the beige wall facing me. Beams of light are coming from the 30-story business building a couple streets away, illuminated through the night to distract the thousands of people living in the dozens of identical skyscrapers surrounding the area. Taking a deep breath, I savor the feeling of being in the so-called “paradise on earth.”
