Prior to my arrival in Morocco, I was aware that there would be significant differences between the classical Arabic that I had been studying at Iowa and the colloquial Arabic used in everyday exchanges in my host country.

I am so grateful that I am spending my semester in New South Wales, Australia, through SIT’s Environmental Action and Sustainability study abroad program. During my time here, I have learned from leading environmentalists, listened to impactful activists, been exposed to the indigenous Aboriginal culture, and experienced indescribable moments of connection with Earth.

As an undergraduate student at the University of Iowa, Anna Patty (B.A. journalism, Spanish '03) had never been on an airplane. That all changed when she decided to study abroad in Heredia, Costa Rica, for an entire academic year. Nearly twenty years after her study abroad experience, Patty is now owner of Be The Good Consulting, LLC, a marketing, public relations, and fundraising firm in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Patty recently took time to reflect on how her study abroad experience has shaped her career.

While it’s more fun to show pictures of all the adventures I’m having, the reality of study abroad is that it is, in fact, study abroad.

Piotr Smietana traveled 4,867 miles to get to Iowa City; now, with the spring tennis season in full swing, he’s ready for the challenges.

Elizabeth (Libby) Lyons is the fourth speaker in the Commitment to Internationalization lecture series. Her talk, "Exploring the Value of Strategic International Science Engagement," will be on Friday, March 30, 2018 at      4:30 p.m. in room 2520D of the University Capitol Centre. This lecture continues the conversation about the UI's vision and strategic themes for campus internationalization.

Guests on the February 22 WorldCanvass, Against Amnesia: Archives, Evidence, and Social Justice, explored the critical role of archives in our everyday lives and historical experience.  The first event in the 2018 Provost’s Global Forum-Obermann Humanities Symposium, the show's discussions opened the virtual doors of archival cabinets and shared some of Iowa’s and our nation’s most intriguing stories and little-known history—much of which might be lost if not for the thoughtful care and preservation undertaken by unsung heroes, sometimes at great personal risk.

The Open Forum provides an opportunity for Bridging Domestic and Global Diversity participants to become change agents to engage the campus community on diversity issues and raise awareness on these issues. Those attending the event will learn about race, ethnicity, and religion/spirituality/faith through student presentations and interactive dialogues.

Anna Kroeger is witnessing preparations for Day Zero first-hand as a UI student studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa. Kroeger, a student in the Tippie College of Business, is spending the Spring 2018 semester at the University of Cape Town through IES Abroad.
