Nine University of Iowa undergraduate students are able to study abroad thanks to support from the Leona Zaharis Scholarship, a fund that was established in 2022 by Cathy Zaharis (BBA finance ’82) in memory of her mother.

LeFevre (BA social studies education, political science ‘25) will teach English, lead a weekly English club through a professional high school, and be a coach for an English debate and speech group.

Josie Mbaye (BA environmental sciences ’25) is the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award (ETA) to Taiwan for 2025-26.

Out of thousands of applicants nationwide, 9 University of Iowa (UI) students—eight of whom are Iowa natives—have been awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which provides up to $5,000 to support study or internship experiences abroad.

The UI awarded dozens of merit-based scholarships for students studying abroad during the 2024–2025 academic year, supporting programs in countries like South Korea, Spain, Italy, and more. These scholarships promote global learning and help students build intercultural and language skills.
