During the 2024 – 2025 academic year, Study Abroad at the University of Iowa awarded multiple merit-based scholarships for students completing study or intern abroad programs in the fall, winter, and spring terms. Congratulations to all of the recipients! Meet some of the recipients below:


The Bedell World Experience Asia Scholarship is available to undergraduate students to study in a geographical area where Japanese, Chinese, or Korean is the primary language.

  • Leila Assadi, a sophomore double majoring in economics and political science with minors in international relations and philosophy and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the Korea University Exchange program in South Korea.
  • Abigail Wilford, a sophomore majoring in business with a minor in Korean studies, studied abroad in spring 2025 through the TEAN South Korea: Korea University program.


The Carol A. Snodgrass Scholarship provides scholarships for undergraduate students in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who are studying abroad in Latin America or Spain. 

  • Inari Alcaraz, a sophomore double majoring in criminology, law & justice and Spanish, studied abroad in spring 2025 through the USAC Alicante program in Spain.


The International Student Study Abroad Scholarship is open to international students enrolled at the University of Iowa that are participating in an approved study abroad program.

  • Chun-Chih Yang, a junior majoring in finance, studied abroad in spring 2025 through the IES Barcelona program in Spain.


The James L. and Rubie S. Watson Study Abroad Scholarship provides funding for undergraduate students who study abroad in one of the following countries and territories: China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and India. 

  • Callan Dockry, a junior majoring in international studies with minors in Korean studies and Asian languages and a certificate in international business, studied abroad in fall 2024 through the TEAN South Korea: Korea University program.


The Joel D. and Sandra Barkan Scholarship is awarded to students who study abroad in various non-Western European geographical areas. Study abroad destinations include countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa.

  • Shahd Ibrahim, a junior majoring in public health with a minor in Arabic studies, studied abroad in fall 2024 through the SIT Jordan: Refugees, Health, and Humanitarian Action program.


The Stuart A. Lundquist Memorial Fund Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student who is majoring in French (first preference) or English (second preference) and studying abroad in France for at least one semester.

  • Noa Jones, a junior triple majoring in English & creative writing, French, and sociology and a member of the honors program, with a minor in gender, women’s and sexuality studies, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the USAC Lyon program in France.
  • Ariana Luna, a junior double majoring in English & creative writing and French, with a translation for global literacy certificate, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the USAC Lyon program in France.
  • Autumn Mayer, a junior double majoring in English & creative writing and French and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the USAC Lyon program in France.


The Naomi Gunderson Scholarship for Foreign Language Study Abroad is awarded to undergraduate students who are committed to developing advanced language proficiency.

  • Dayanara Sanchez, a sophomore double majoring in international relations and French with a minor in economics, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the CIEE Paris Open Campus program in France.
  • Vanessa Vihnanek, a junior majoring in elementary education with a minor in Spanish, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the CIEE Barcelona Liberal Arts program in Spain.


The Stanley Merit-Based Scholarship is a competitive, merit-based scholarship designed for undergraduate students who will study abroad.

  • Jackson Fischer, a junior majoring in journalism & mass communication and an event management certificate, studied abroad in fall 2024 on the Wells in Florence: Lorenzo di Medici program in Italy.
  • Cora McLaren, a junior double majoring in linguistics and German with a minor in communication science & disorders and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in fall 2024 on the Academic Year in Freiburg program in Germany.
  • Luke Moenning, a junior double majoring in computer science and mathematics with a minor in psychology and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in fall 2024 on the Iowa Regents in Ireland program.
  • Lance Regehr, a junior double majoring in business analytics & information systems and computer science, studied abroad in fall 2024 on the American College of Thessaloniki program in Greece.
  • Danielle Withrow, a junior majoring in English & creative writing, studied abroad in fall 2024 on the USAC Madrid program in Spain.
  • Lyla Adelstein, a sophomore double majoring in enterprise leadership and communication studies and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the TEAN Australia: UNSW program.
  • Inari Alcaraz, a sophomore majoring in criminology, law & justice and Spanish, studied abroad in spring 2025 through the USAC Alicante program in Spain.
  • Payton Basquin, a junior majoring in marketing with an event management certificate, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the CIMBA program in Italy.
  • Kirsten Lasiewicz, a junior double majoring in accounting and finance, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the CIEE Barcelona Business & Culture program in Spain.
  • Nicholas Maleri, a junior majoring in finance with a minor in sport & recreation management and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the Wells in Florence: Lorenzo di Medici program in Italy.
  • Anna O'Connor, a sophomore double majoring in international studies and social work with a minor in Spanish, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the SIT Argentina Social Movements & Human Rights program.
  • Henry Rouw, a sophomore majoring in psychology with a minor in Spanish, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the USAC Madrid program in Spain.


The Dr. Margaret G. Fox Scholarship is awarded to select undergraduates who intend to study abroad during their sophomore, junior, or senior year. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and plan to return to the University of Iowa for at least one semester.

  • Tristen Wendling, a junior majoring in German with a minor in political science, studied abroad in fall 2024 through the Academic Year in Freiburg program in Germany.
  • John Aschenbrenner, a junior majoring in elementary education, completed student teaching in spring 2025 in Japan.
  • Angela Boateng, a junior majoring in political science with a minor in cinema, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the Iowa Regents in Ireland program.
  • Julia DiMartini, a sophomore majoring in marketing with a minor in psychology and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the Wells in Florence: Lorenzo di Medici program in Italy.
  • John DiSimone, a sophomore majoring in accounting with a minor in psychology, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the CIMBA program in Italy.
  • Sarah Guilfoyle, a junior majoring in political science with minors in economics, German, and international studies and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the IES Freiburg European Union program in Germany.
  • Katherina Iliescu, a junior double majoring in social studies education and sociology, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the IES Rome program in Italy.
  • Nadia Maymi Nieblas, a sophomore majoring in environmental policy & planning with a minor in political science and a sustainability certificate, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the CIEE Barcelona Advanced Liberal Arts program in Spain.
  • Mariana Tejeda, a first-year student double majoring in journalism & mass communication and cinema & screenwriting, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the CIEE Paris Open Campus program in France.
  • Caleb Wetzel, a sophomore majoring in English & creative writing with minors in communication studies, history, and ancient civilization, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the IES Dublin Writers Program in Ireland.


The R&MJ Stanley Scholarship was established in 2001 by Richard (MS '63) and Mary Jo Stanley. The fund supports undergraduate study abroad students.

  • Luke Moenning, a junior double majoring in computer science and mathematics with a minor in psychology and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in fall 2024 on the Iowa Regents in Ireland program.
  • Lance Regehr, a junior double majoring in business analytics & information systems and computer science, studied abroad in fall 2024 on the American College of Thessaloniki program in Greece.
  • Danielle Withrow, a junior majoring in English & creative writing, studied abroad in fall 2024 on the USAC Madrid program in Spain.
  • Katherine Hampson, a sophomore majoring in political science with a nonprofit leadership & philanthropy certificate and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the Wells in Florence: Lorenzo di Medici program in Italy.
  • Spencer Kramer, a sophomore majoring in finance, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the CIEE Barcelona Business & Culture program in Spain.
  • Emma Lindahl, a sophomore majoring in psychology, studied abroad in spring 2025 on the Wells in Florence: Lorenzo di Medici program in Italy.

     


International Programs (IP) at the University of Iowa (UI) is committed to enriching the global experience of UI students, faculty, staff, and the general public by leading efforts to promote internationally oriented teaching, research, creative work, and community engagement.  IP provides support for international students and scholars, administers scholarships and assistance for students who study, intern, or do research abroad, and provides funding opportunities and grant-writing assistance for faculty engaged in international research. IP shares their stories through various media, and by hosting multiple public engagement activities each year.
