African Studies Program hosts April 11 talk on ethnographic research in Tanzania

UI International Programs and the African Studies Program invite you to attend an upcoming event titled "Conservation and Conversation: Ethnographic Research in a Biodiversity Hotspot in Tanzania." Featuring guest speaker Jessica Pouchet from Northwestern University, this event will take place on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, from 11 a.m. -12:15 p.m. in 60 Schaeffer Hall.

The U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, in cooperation with the Institute of International Education, are pleased to announce the launch of the 2018-2019 Fulbright U.S. Student Program application cycle. Since 1946, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program has provided future American leaders with an unparalleled opportunity to study, conduct research and serve as English teaching assistants abroad in order to build relations between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards over 1,900 grants annually and currently operates in more than 140 countries worldwide.

Q&A with Carli Brucker about her study abroad experience in Hong Kong

Undergraduate engineering student Carli Brucker studied abroad in Hong Kong during the summer of 2015. To help fund her study abroad experience, Brucker used the Summer Hawk Tuition Grant. She also applied for and received a Global Engineering Scholarship. Brucker pursued a second academic experience abroad through the course International Perspectives:  Xicotepec. The course involved a service-learning experience over Spring Break in Xicotepec, Mexico.

Back to Tianjin: a reflection on study abroad friendships

Life’s most special moments often imprint in our memories like Chinese calligraphy ink on rice paper. The past few days, much ink flowed as I re-discovered memories of the past at Tianjin University of Technology (TUT), the place I spent the summer of my twentieth birthday. In 2015, I was one of seven University of Iowa (UI) students who were hosted in TUT for two months as part of a ten-year language exchange program.

Hay que aprovechar - making the most of my free time abroad

My free time looks a bit different than that of a student studying abroad. For my student teaching semester, I teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in an elementary school Monday - Thursday from 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. - noon. Moreover, my social circle includes my host family and the teachers with whom I work. Thankfully, I have been blessed enough to make some great friends with various other teachers my first two weeks of teaching and have already had many adventures as a result.
