Today, Peace Corps announced that Iowa City, Iowa ranks No. 10 among metropolitan areas with the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers per 100,000 residents. There are 10 volunteers from Iowa City currently serving worldwide, and 2,388 Hawkeyes have served in the Peace Corps since the agency’s founding in 1961.

Lauren Darby (MAT ‘15, Social Studies Education) graduated in December 2015, after completing her student teaching in New Zealand as part of the Student Teaching Abroad Scholarship from the College of Education. For the 2016-2017 school year, Darby is overseas once again, this time to Wolfsburg, Germany, where she is teaching American language and culture in 5-12th grade English classes as part of the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship grant program.

In a move likely to calm diplomatic and trade concerns created by Donald Trump’s rhetoric during and after the presidential campaign, the president-elect has tapped Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad to be his ambassador to China.

Chinese nationals account for the largest share of international students attending Iowa’s public universities, leaving administrators hopeful about the potential for their campuses of the governor’s nomination to be the U.S. ambassador to China. “I hope it will continue the strong connections,” Downing Thomas, the University of Iowa associate provost for academic affairs and dean of International Programs, said Wednesday. “Not only for Chinese students to come here, but for all UI students to hopefully benefit from the ties and connections that result.”
