Cultural Conversations: Center promotes interconnected student body

Tucked away in the depths of the Main Library, you can sometimes find students meeting to have engaging conversations. These students, however, aren’t quizzing each other for an upcoming exam or taking a study break for a light chat. They are students broadening their communication skills while simultaneously breaking down cultural barriers.

Refugee Relief week runs from today through Friday with events taking place each day. There will be nine events around campus, varying from creating clothing for those in need to hearing the stories of refugees who recently traveled overseas to America.

International Programs presented WorldCanvass alongside the exhibition "Abstract Expressionism" at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, England, on Saturday, October 29, 2016. Host Joan Kjaer and her guests, UI President Bruce Harreld, Co-Curator of "Abstract Expressionism" Dr. David Anfam, Director of the UI's International Writing Program Christopher Merrill, and Director of the UI Museum of Art Sean O'Harrow, discussed the long history of artistic accomplishment and innovation at the University of Iowa, as well as the seminal importance to abstract expressionism of the UI's Jackson Pollock work "Mural."

When you are in a foreign country, you walk around with wide eyes, comparing this and that between your host country and your home country, you realize the flaws of your host country and your home country, you defend your host and home country from the ridiculous stereotypes…  This election has been a roller coaster from the get go, and walking around the streets of Santiago on November 9th gave me that sort of nauseous feeling in the pit of my stomach.
