Critical Language Scholarship winner to study in Brazil

An Iowa City native’s journey through skateboarding and music led to a path in medicine and a Fulbright Grant.

Jill Oberhart, a UI Fulbright scholar, will touch down in Brazil in November, where she plans to start a children’s choir.

Anger Dok, who will receive a BA in global health studies from the University of Iowa this May, earned a 2019 David L. Boren Scholarship. Born in South Sudan and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Anger will spend next year studying Swahili in Tanzania. 

Eli Bratsch-Prince of Ames, Iowa, earned a 2019 David L. Boren Scholarship. A political science major at the UI, Bratsch-Prince will spend next year studying Arabic in Jordan.

Yanni Liang, a PhD candidate in occupational and environmental health at the University of Iowa, earned a 2019 David L. Boren Fellowship, and will spend next year studying Khmer in Cambodia. 

Alexa Frank, who will receive an MFA in creative writing from the University of Iowa this May, is the winner of a Fulbright Research Award to Japan for 2019-20

Five University of Iowa students were recently awarded Critical Language Scholarships (CLS): Alexander Bare (to study Arabic in Tangier, Morocco); Abby Rinaldi (to study Mandarin in Dalian, China); Mark Schoen (to study Bahasa in Malang, Indonesia); and Angel Trachta (to study Korean in Gwangju, South Korea). 

Jeffrey Clark, who will receive a BA in English and history from the University of Iowa this May, is the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Award to South Korea for 2019-20

Catherine Liu, who will receive an MFA in book arts from the University of Iowa this May, is the winner of a Fulbright Arts grant in Design/Bookmaking to China for 2019-20

Michael J. Parisi Mercado, Doctor of Pharmacy and Master of Public Health candidate at the University of Iowa, is the winner of a Fulbright Research Award in Public Health to Romania for 2019-20
