International studies student Abigail Fowler of North Liberty, Iowa, has been awarded a 2023 U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study at Okayama University for an intensive Japanese language program. 

Recently returned from abroad, this winter’s Diversity Ambassadors Scholarship recipients share what they thought of their experiences and what advice they might have for others considering studying abroad. 

Seventeen UI students and alumni were chosen from about 10,000 Fulbright Award applicants nationwide to serve as representatives of the U.S. Department of State.

Adelaide Brooks, of Ankeny, Iowa, was awarded a 2022 David L. Boren Fellowship to study Arabic in Jordan.

A generous gift from Cathy Zaharis (BBA finance ’82) established the Leona Zaharis Scholarship Fund, a scholarship created in honor of Cathy's mother to support students who, like Leona, are curious about the world and want to study abroad.

Chosen from thousands of applicants from colleges and universities across the U.S., twelve University of Iowa undergraduates were awarded the competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Megan Lederman, who received a BA with a double major in English and creative writing (emphasis in Native American literature) and French from the University of Iowa in May 2019, is the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Award to Vietnam for 2022-23.

Greta Becker, a UI Carver College of Medicine student, is the winner of a Fulbright Study/Research grant in Public Health to Vietnam for 2022-23.

Tartil Ali, who will receive a Master of Clinical Anatomy from the University of Iowa in May 2022, is the winner of a Fulbright Study/Research grant in Public Health to Morocco for 2022-23.

Anna Correa, who will receive a Master of Public Health in community and behavior health from the University of Iowa in May 2022, is the winner of a Fulbright Study/Research grant in Public Health to India for 2022-23.

Mastura Ibnat, who will receive a BA in English and international studies from the University of Iowa in May 2022, is the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Award to Taiwan for 2022-23.
