Discovering how poet Walt Whiman’s work was transformed when translated and absorbed into other languages and cultures “Whitman” became “Whitmann” in a number of early German articles about the poet), Folsom and his German colleague from Dortmund, Walter Gruzenweig, worked together to help form the Transatlantic Walt Whiman Association, and to set up annual international Whitman seminars and symposia.

This collaboration has in turn led to a constellation of interpretive translation projects, some of them carried out here at Iowa, and others around the world.

Professor Folsom is also the co-director of the Walt Whitman Archive, is the editor of the Walt Whitman Quarterly Review, editor of the Whitman Series at the University of Iowa Press, and author of 10 books on Whitman.

Lunch will be catered for this session only, so come out and enjoy what’s sure to be a fascinating discussion!

This series is co-sponsored by the Iowa Chapter of the Fulbright Association and UI International Programs. For more information, contact the seminar series coordinator, Sonia Gunderson.
