Munachim Amah is a second-year PhD student researching how journalists work, where they work, and what they produce.

President of the Society of Black Graduate and Professional Students, college advisor for the Alpha Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and soon to be graduate in May 2022 with an MFA in creative writing, fiction. Michaeljulius Idani’s resume is covered with opportunities far and wide that he’s been afforded at the University of Iowa. All of this he has accomplished while conducting international research funded by the Stanley Graduate Award for International Research, an award he received in 2021.

Camellia Pham, a University of Iowa student graduating in May 2022 with a BA in comparative literature and Chinese and a 2021 recipient of a Stanley Undergraduate Award for International Research, took an unconventional, yet effective, path to completing her research project.

Meet the recipients of the 2022 Stanley Award for International Research

Ebenezer (“Eben”) Aidoo, PhD student in the UI Department of Communication Studies, had several admissions offers from other graduate programs, but chose the University of Iowa “…because of the outstanding teaching and learning resources available for graduate students, reasonable cost of living, stellar health insurance package for graduate teaching and research assistants, and the vibrant academic community in Iowa City.”

University of Iowa alumna, author, and artist A. Kendra Greene recently published her first full-length book, The Museum of Whales You Will Never See: And Other Excursions to Iceland’s Most Unusual Museums. Greene graciously took some time to reminisce about her University of Iowa experience as an MFA student in the Nonfiction Writing Program and graduate certificate student in the Center for the Book, as well as the impact of receiving a Stanley Award for International Research.

The University of Iowa offers Stanley Awards for International Research for graduate and undergraduate students pursuing research and learning activities in international studies not available on campus. Emma Sillman, UI undergraduate studying global health studies and economics, was a recent recipient of funding through the Stanley Awards for International Research. That funding helped her complete a research project in India. During the summer 2019 term, Sillman spent three weeks in Mysore, India, taking classes; then spent the remainder of her stay working at a hospital in Sargur, India.

UI senior Allexis Mahanna won the Undergraduate Library Research Award for studying migration influxes in two Spanish cities. The new award will continue each semester to incentivize undergraduates to participate in research.
