The South Asian Studies and Global Health Studies Programs will host a seminar featuring Professor Susan Heydon of the University of Otago in New Zealand. This event is free and open to the public, and will take place on Thursday, November 19, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in 1117 UCC. 

Susan Heydon (PhD, History, University of Otago, New Zealand, 2006) is a Senior Lecturer in Social Pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy, University of Otago, New Zealand. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students about medicines and society. Her research uses historical methods to explore current health issues and focuses on Nepal Modern Medicine and International Aid: Khunde Hospital, Nepal 1966-1998 where she spent two years with her family as a volunteer in the Mt Everest region. She is author of Modern Medicine and International Aid: Khunde Hospital, Nepal 1966-1998 and has been published in a variety of book chapters and journal articles.

Dr. Heydon will speak to the South Asian Seminar on her current research topic, the eradication of polio from Nepal in South Asia in in the 1960s and 1970s - a considerable achievement. She will explain why the programme proved to be  successful, as well as how the official history points to the specific features of the global eradication program. Heydon will also explore how other factors in Nepal contributed to the success. Attendees will also learn about her project, which is to gather evidence about smallpox in Nepal from diverse sources prior to the to the 1960s to better understand and evaluate the achievement of the subsequent eradication program.
