As an institution, the University of Iowa has been named a Fulbright top producer for eight years. Most recently, 17 University of Iowa students and alumni were chosen from more than 10,000 Fulbright Award applicants nationwide to serve as representatives of the U.S. Department of State in 14 countries during the 2024-25 academic year. These students are teaching English abroad, earning graduate degrees at cutting-edge universities, conducting research and creative arts projects, and serving in local community organizations.
“In the past six years, more than 100 University of Iowa students have received Fulbright awards in order to teach English abroad (from a variety of majors, from political science to English and creative writing), write novels or creative nonfiction, pursue graduate degrees in other countries, or undertake dissertation research,” shared Karen Wachsmuth, associate director of international fellowships. “Since we have been consistently ranked as a Top Producing institution, our students have a proven track record of success in this highly prestigious competition. Receiving a Fulbright can jumpstart careers, demonstrate a well-known credential for future employers, and provide Non-Competitive Eligibility status for those seeking careers in the federal government.”
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is designed to give recent bachelor’s degrees, master’s candidates and degree holders, doctoral candidates, young professionals, and artists opportunities for personal development and international experience. Projects may include English Teaching Assistantships, independent research, creative/artistic projects, university coursework or degree programs, or training in a music conservatory or art school.
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. government and administered by the Institute of International Education.
