Dr. Charles W. Day

International Programs at the University of Iowa administers the Peace, Charlie One World Scholarship, a distinguished award dedicated to supporting undergraduate international students studying at Iowa. The scholarship is made possible by the generosity of Dr. Charles W. Day, a retired clinical psychologist and consultant who was raised in Iowa and passed away in 2021. His passing marked the end of a remarkable life dedicated to education, philanthropy, and the promotion of international dialogue. Dr. Day's commitment to these ideals was the driving force behind the creation of the Peace, Charlie One World Scholarship, which since 2002, has supported over 30 international students, assisting them with the financial means to pursue studies and research opportunities here in the United States.

Dr. Day's inspiration for establishing the scholarship was deeply rooted in his personal experiences and a profound belief in the transformative power of international education. Dr. Day earned three degrees from the University of Iowa (BA ‘60, MA ‘62, PhD ‘64) and worked in California, Iowa, and Asia. In 1986, Dr. Day moved to India and spent five years teaching psychotherapy and counseling skills to health professionals and teachers. He also spent three years in Thailand as a visiting professor in psychology and returned to Des Moines in 1994. Dr. Day's international experiences solidified his desire to help deserving international students study in the United States and, by doing so, contribute to world peace.

“Dr. Charles Day's legacy at the University of Iowa is one of profound generosity and unwavering support for international education,” said Russ Ganim, associate provost and dean of International Programs. “This scholarship not only eases the financial burden on international students studying at Iowa but also promotes world peace, understanding, and compassion through higher education. Dr. Day believed in the transformative power of cross-cultural experiences, and his dedication to fostering global understanding continues to inspire us all. The Peace, Charlie One World Scholarship is a testament to his vision of a world where education bridges cultural divides and promotes peace.”

Scott Kollings, Dr. Day’s nephew, spoke about his uncle's dedication to international education and the joy he found in helping students achieve their dreams.

“Charlie was pleased with the education he received at the University of Iowa,” shared Kollings. “He valued the opportunities higher education afforded and felt compelled to assist those with the ambition but limited means to realize their dreams and goals. He believed International Programs at the University of Iowa was very well suited to serve as a stepping stone for those deserving and in need of a chance to realize their aspirations.”

The impact of the scholarship is perhaps best illustrated through the stories of its recipients. One former scholarship recipient, Ola Khallafallah (BS microbiology, pre-medicine ‘24), came to study at Iowa from Sudan and emphasized the support and resources provided by faculty and staff at Iowa allowed her to prosper at the university.

“Receiving the Peace, Charlie One World Scholarship is a deeply meaningful milestone for me,” said Khallafallah. “It symbolizes the recognition of my journey from Sudan to the University of Iowa, pursuing my dream of becoming a physician. This scholarship represents more than just financial support; it signifies validation for the challenges I've faced and the dedication I've shown to my studies."

As we continue to honor Dr. Day's legacy, the Peace, Charlie One World Scholarship stands as a testament to his lifelong dedication to education and international understanding, and International Programs remains committed to ensuring Dr. Day’s vision continues to inspire future generations of international students. This scholarship is more than just a financial award; it is a bridge to a world of opportunities for international students studying at the University of Iowa.
