In 1946, President Harry Truman signed a new bill into law that designated the use of funds for the 'promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture, and science.' Thus, the illustrious Fulbright Program was born. Over the past 60 years the Fulbright Program has facilitated the travel of nearly 350,000 students and young professionals for cultural and academic exchange.

On April 3, 2015, the University of Iowa will host its first annual Fulbright Day to celebrate past UI Fulbright faculty and student awardees and to provide prospective students the opportunity to learn more about the Fulbright process.

The Fulbright Day will take place on Friday, April 3 from 12:30- 4:00 p.m. in 1117 UCC.

All events are free and open to the public but pre-registration is required for the roundtable lunch from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Register now!

Two additional events will take place on Thursday, April 2 including:

• A chance to meet with Visiting Fulbright Representative Mr. Lee Rivers and Fulbright Student Alumni Ambassador Ms. Allie Surina (Fulbright to China, 2012-13)
• Fulbright U.S. Student Program Information Sessions for interested students in 1117 UCC, 7:30-8:30 p.m

​Friday's UI Fulbright Day will feature:

• Fulbright U.S. Student Program Information Sessions for interested students in 1117 UCC (1:30-2:30 p.m.) We’ll also be joined by this year’s brand new UI Fulbright award recipients for 2015-16!
• International Roundtable Lunch (12:30-1:30) with faculty and international students from your country or international region of interest at no cost
• Fulbright Day Lecture (3:00-4:00 p.m.): Keynote speeches by two of the UI’s faculty Fulbright recipients: 
  • Marvin Bell, (UI Professor Emeritus, English), the first Poet Laureate of Iowa and a two-time recipient of Fulbright awards to Australia and Yugoslavia
  • Tim Barrett, (UI Associate Professor and Director, Center for the Book), Fulbright U.S. Student awardee to Japan and MacArthur Fellow
