From April 17-23, the Festival of Contemporary Music from Israel will showcase living Israeli composers for the University of Iowa’s Provost’s Global Forum.

The UI Center for New Music will host an exciting, vibrant, international festival April 17-23 featuring music by living Israeli composers in collaboration with the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

The program will blend live musical performances and conversation with ensemble members about the pieces to be performed during the forum and, more generally, about the contemporary music scene in Israel.   

This week-long festival, in collaboration with the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, will feature nine public concerts.

International Programs provides funding opportunities and grant-writing assistance for UI faculty engaged in international research, partnerships, and other activities, and is invested in the success that faculty have in their field.

The 2019 Provost’s Global Forum, “Why School? International Perspectives on Education and Social Transformation,” will examine the structures of school systems and the influence they have on society and change.

The 2019 Provost’s Global Forum, “Why School? International Perspectives on Education and Social Transformation” (April 11-13), will examine education in a global context, both as a reflection of social norms and as a powerful force for change. We kick off the symposium on April 11 with WorldCanvass, when host Joan Kjaer and an expert panel discuss the societal roles played by educational institutions here and abroad. WorldCanvass is a free, public event at MERGE, 136 South Dubuque Street. The program begins at 5:30 p.m., with a pre-show reception from 5-5:30 p.m.

Guests on the February 22 WorldCanvass will explore the critical role of archives in our everyday lives and historical experience.  Called “Against Amnesia: Archives, Evidence, and Social Justice,” the program is the first event in the Provost’s Global Forum-Obermann Humanities Symposium, the bulk of which will occur on March 1-3.  Panelists will open the virtual doors of archival cabinets and share some of Iowa’s and our nation’s most intriguing stories and little-known history—much of which might be lost if not for the thoughtful care and preservation undertaken by unsung heroes, sometimes at great personal risk. WorldCanvass will take place from 5:30-7 p.m., February 22, at MERGE, 136 South Dubuque Street.  The program is free and open to the public.  Please come early for a pre-show catered reception from 5-5:30 p.m.

The University of Iowa held the 2017 Provost’s Global Forum on Women’s Health and the Environment: Going Up in Smoke this past weekend.

Cooking with firewood and other biofuels is one of the most urgent problems in the world today. It affects the health and wellbeing of those inhaling the fumes at close range, relies on increasingly scarce sources of firewood, and contributes over 20% of global black carbon emissions. The harm to individuals and the environment cannot be denied, and yet there’s little awareness of the issue among the general public. WorldCanvass host Joan Kjaer and a panel of experts drawn from multiple fields including engineering, urban and regional planning, public health, anthropology, and geography will discuss the use of traditional wood-burning cookstoves and the complex social and cultural underpinnings of the practice on the April 12 WorldCanvass, a highlight of the UI’s yearly Provost’s Global Forum. The public is invited to attend the April 12 discussion at the Voxman Music Building Recital Hall from 7:30-9:30 p.m. There will be a pre-show catered reception from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Presented by Gautam Yadama, assistant vice chancellor for international affairs and dean of the Boston College School of Social Work, the Joel Barkan Memorial Lecture will take place on Wednesday April 12, at 11:00 a.m. in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol Museum. The lecture will kick off the 2017 Provost's Global Forum, Women’s Health & the Environment: Going Up in Smoke.

In April, the University of Iowa will host scholars, experts, and researchers from around the world as part of the 2017 Provost’s Global Forum, "Women's Health & Environment: Going Up in Smoke. ” The goal of the Provost's Global Forum is to inspire discussions of global affairs and build relationships between the university and the state of Iowa.
