By becoming fluent in Portuguese and Spanish, Holly Harris is striving for an international career where she can use the power of language to bring people together.

IOWA CITY — When University of Iowa senior Ajla Dizdarevic learned in March 2020 she was a finalist for a prestigious Fulbright English teaching assistantship to Croatia, her enthusiasm was tempered by the many unknowns and precarious state of the world — plagued by a fast-spreading pandemic.

This year’s nine student and three faculty Fulbright winners, along with 13 deferred awardees from 2020–21, will teach and conduct research in more than a dozen countries around the world during the 2021–22 academic year.

How much does study abroad cost? Join International Programs and the Office of Student Financial Aid for a virtual info session on Tuesday, November 16, from 1-2 p.m., where students will learn what factors go into determining the cost of studying abroad and what funding is available to them.

The Stanley Undergraduate and Graduate Awards for International Research are given annually to outstanding University of Iowa students for the pursuit of learning activities in international studies and international research/fieldwork. Chosen from thousands of applicants nationwide, five students from the University of Iowa have been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship to study critical languages during the summer of 2021:

Sarah Day, who received an MA in rehabilitation and counselor education from the University of Iowa in 2018, is the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Montenegro for 2021-22, which selects only 2 awardees

Dilon Gonçalves, who received a BA in journalism & mass communication from the University of Iowa in 2019, is the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Estonia for 2021-22, which selects only 2 awardees
