Addie Leak, a UI graduate with an M.F.A in literary translation, is the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship grant to Jordan for 2016-17.

UI International Programs congratulates Maya Ramaswamy on being awarded a Boren Fellowship to study in India during the 2016-17 academic year. Maya is a Ph.D. candidate in the University of Iowa College of Public Health’s Occupational and Environmental Health program. She will study Tamil at VIT University in Tamil Nadu, India.

Noaquia Callahan, a Ph.D. candidate in history at the University of Iowa, is one of 13 Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant winners from the UI for 2016-17. Noaquia will undertake research on the development of interracial collaboration between African-American civil rights leader Mary Church Terrell and German women activists from 1888-1922 at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Heidelberg. As part of her community engagement, Noaquia will work with the German-American Fulbright Commission's Diversity Initiative to prepare Turkish, Afro-German, Muslim, and other students for study abroad in the U.S.

On March 31- April 1, 2016, the University of Iowa will host its second annual Fulbright Day to celebrate past UI Fulbright faculty and student awardees and to provide prospective students the opportunity to learn more about the Fulbright process. In the year of its 70th anniversary, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 360,000 participants—chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

The Fulbright Lunch & Learn series continues with "Negotiating Cultural Boundaries: Teaching Clinical Medicine in Jordan." Featuring guest speaker Dr. George Bergus, professor in the department of Family Medicine at the UI, this event will take place on April 8 from 12:30-1:20 p.m. in 1117 UCC.

Join International Programs for the fourth-annual intensive Fulbright U.S. Student Program workshop on Friday, January 29, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in 2520 University Capitol Centre. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is open to juniors, seniors, graduate students, Ph.D. students, and recent graduates who are looking for international opportunities. Only U.S. citizens may apply.

Speakeasy for Stanley will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015 at Sanctuary Pub as part of a series of informational sessions for the Stanley Awards for International Research.

International Programs will host a series of information sessions regarding the Stanley Awards for International Research. Undergraduates interested in international studies are especially encouraged to attend.

Please join us for an informal essay workshop on Wednesday, November 4, from 5-6:30 p.m. in 1117 University Capitol Centre. The workshop is open to any student interested in applying for the Critical Language Scholarship. Associate Director of International Fellowships Karen Wachsmuth will guide provide sample essays and give students who would like to share their current drafts some constructive feedback.

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad in areas of the world critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Patrick Reed graduated with a Master in Fine Arts in papermaking and bookbinding from the UI Center for the Book in 2013. He received a Fulbright grant in 2014 to the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, for his project “Apocalyptic Themes of Natural Disaster in 16th and 21st Century Woodcut Prints.” He is currently back in Germany continuing his research through a DAAD Study Scholarship and Research Grant. International Programs interviewed Patrick to get his insights on living abroad, and how the experience affected his research.

It was impossible to get lost. The address of the archives was clear on the website: monumental area, next to the cathedral. It was not my first time in Cuenca, but I did not know how long it would take me walking from downtown, where my hostel was. I left two hours before the archives opened to make sure I would take full advantage of the four hours a day the archive is open.
