The European Studies Group invites you to attend the first event of the ESG Lecture Series, titled "The Poetics of HIV/AIDS in Contemporary Spain." This event will take place on Friday, October 21, 2016 at noon. 

Visiting Assistant Professor Melissa Moreton will discuss her work examining the material culture of late medieval, Renaissance, and early modern Italy (1300-1650), combining methodologies from history, material book studies, art history, and the quantitative sciences.

Has French Cinema lost its roots and become a nondescript mass of so-called European film traditions? Is transnationalism just a weighted synonym for ‘international coproduction?’ Can popular cinema also be art?

The European Studies Group and the French and Italian Forum will co-host an upcoming talk, "Le Soleil Couchant by Théophile Gautier (1830): An Introduction to Reading French Poetry." Featuring guest speaker Geoffrey Hope, a professor of French at the UI, a reading and discussion will take place on the poetry of Théophile Gautier, in honor of the retirement of Professor Wendelin Guentner.

The European Studies Group will host a lecture on, "Writing the Early Modern Spanish Empire in the Pacific." Featuring guest speaker Ana M. Rodríguez-Rodríguez, the talk will explore the Spanish presence in the Philippines in the 16th and 17th centuries. This event is free and open to the public, and will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, in 315 Phillips Hall.

The European Studies Group will present a guest lecture by Edward Ousselin of Western Washington University on "Europe as a Literary Concept: The Case of Victor Hugo" at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, October 16 in 2520D University Capitol Centre. The event is free and open to the public.

The European Studies Group will present a guest lecture by Cristina Moreiras of the University of Michigan on "Critical Regionalism and Historical Reason in Spanish Documentary" at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 27 in 315 Phillips Hall. This event is free and open to the public. A light luncheon will also be served.

The European Studies Group will continue its spring 2015 lecture series on Friday, April 24 at 12:30 p.m. in 2520B University Capitol Centre with a lecture by Jennifer Sessions entitled, “Monumental Struggles for Decolonization: Colonial Statutes, Iconoclasm, and Preservation during the Algerian War.”

The European Studies Group will present a guest lecture by Sheryl Kroen of the University of Florida on "Narrating the Postwar with Robinson Crusoe" at 12:30 p.m. on April 1, 2015, in Room 1117 University Capitol Centre. The event is free and open to the public and a light lunch will be provided.
