Three Hawkeye Abroad Creators announced for spring 2026
Wednesday, January 21, 2026

International Programs has selected its spring 2026 Hawkeye Abroad Creators! Launched in 2025, the program features students studying abroad who serve as digital ambassadors, sharing their experiences in real time on the @uiabroad Instagram account.

Each creator receives a $250 stipend to develop content that reflects their everyday experiences abroad, with the goal of giving students back on campus a more personal, relatable view of study abroad—and helping them imagine what the experience could look like for themselves.

Three students make up this spring’s cohort, sharing their experiences in France, Italy, and Czechia (formerly the Czech Republic).

Nic Cazin, a second-year student triple majoring in ancient civilizations, French, and English & creative writing from Wake Forest, North Carolina, is studying abroad this spring with the USAC Lyon program.

Why did you choose to study abroad in France?

“For as long as I can remember, I have always dreamed of studying abroad in France. My mom often tells me stories of spending her summers there, and I have longed to do the same. While abroad, I hope to strengthen my connection to French culture, grow my fluency, and connect with that side of my heritage. My family’s background and connection led me to choose this program. While we are primarily from southern France, we have strong ties in Lyon; my grandfather used to study in the libraries at L’Université Catholique de Lyon (the host school), even lecturing there once or twice. This close tie to both the city of Lyon and France will enable me to appreciate what I am learning and experiencing on another level: knowing I have and had family who walked the same streets and buildings will be a surreal, wonderful experience.”

Why did you want to be a Hawkeye Abroad Creator?

“As a Hawkeye Abroad Creator, I will have the opportunity to further develop my creative skills and share my work with others, while also documenting my study abroad experience in France and throughout Europe. I hope to share these experiences with authenticity, highlighting both the beauty of cultural discovery as well as the challenges and growth that accompany traveling. By combining narrative, visual media, and lived experience, I hope to encourage my peers to step beyond their comfort zones, engage with diverse communities, and seize every opportunity to explore the world.”

Alyssa Mulligan, a third-year student majoring in marketing from Naperville, Illinois, is studying abroad this spring with the USAC Verona program.

Why did you choose to study abroad in Italy?

“I chose the USAC Verona program because it aligns with my academic goals and my desire for authentic cultural immersion. As a marketing major and cinema minor, I wanted to study in a city that is rich in history and creativity but not overwhelmed by tourism. Verona offers the perfect balance, allowing me to experience Italian culture in a more genuine way while practicing my language skills daily. Its vibrant local community and cultural heritage provide an ideal environment for learning and personal growth."

Why did you want to be a Hawkeye Abroad Creator?

“I want to be a Hawkeye Abroad Creator because I enjoy sharing experiences through creative content and inspiring others to explore new opportunities. As someone passionate about marketing and storytelling, this role allows me to combine my skills with my love for travel and cultural exchange. I enjoy creating engaging social media content and believe I can capture authentic moments that resonate with students considering studying abroad. By sharing my journey, I hope to break down misconceptions, highlight the academic and personal benefits, and encourage others to step outside their comfort zones. Being a Hawkeye Abroad Creator will allow me to represent the University of Iowa while doing something I genuinely enjoy: creating and connecting.”

Laura Rollinger, a third-year student double majoring in marketing and 3D design from Cascade, Iowa, is studying abroad this spring on the CEA CAPA Prague: Study in Prague with CEA CAPA and AAU program.

Why did you choose to study abroad in Czechia?

“I selected CEA CAPA and AAU in Prague because through their university, I was able to continue both my business and art degrees without having to choose one over the other for a semester. I was especially drawn to Prague because of the city’s rich history through art and architecture. During WWII, Prague came through with minimal damage as a result of air strikes, which in turn preserved much of their original architecture and cultural sites. As an art student, I am excited to see and immerse myself in this rich and beautiful city and call it home for a couple of months! I also wanted to select a host location in Europe, so it is easier to travel to neighboring countries and make the most of my time abroad.”

Why did you want to be a Hawkeye Abroad Creator?

“I wanted to be a Hawkeye Abroad Creator because I love sharing my experiences with friends and family, and I hope to inspire others who are considering studying abroad in the future. Professionally, I hope to go into digital marketing after college, and this position as a content creator will give me a unique opportunity of hands-on experience creating posts and blogs geared towards a target audience. While abroad, I will also be creating content for CEA CAPA, and I am ecstatic to be a part of something bigger than myself to help other students overcome their doubts and get out of their comfort zones. I plan to bring this same energy to the Hawkeye Abroad Creator team in sharing my own experiences and adventures while in Prague!”
