The University of Iowa (UI) Study Abroad office has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Freeman Foundation to provide scholarships to students who pursue summer internships in Asia.

The Freeman Foundation aims to strengthen the bonds between the United States and countries in East and Southeast Asia. The Freeman East Asia Internship Program is intended to provide opportunities for American college students to gain real work experiences while connecting with local populations in the region.

Monica Ernberger, assistant director, internships, Study Abroad, led UI’s successful grant proposal. A strong advocate of global learning opportunities, Ernberger collaborates with faculty, staff, and students across campus to connect students with international internships that align with their academic interests and career aspirations.

According to Ernberger, the opportunities this specific grant will provide are significant.

“This grant is an amazing and generous gift,” remarked Ernberger. “Due to Mr. Freeman's dedication to fostering positive ties between Asia and the U.S., students who might never be able to complete an internship abroad will not only have a fantastic experience but will do so in a way that directly ties to career outcomes.”

Eligible programs sponsored by UI Study Abroad include CIEE’s Summer Global Internships in Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul, and Taipei. Applications are now open and close on February 1, 2026.

Interested students may contact Monica Ernberger at monica-ernberger@uiowa.edu.
