Dear prospective study abroad students,
I want to share with you my experience studying abroad in Australia, which was an amazing journey that has exceeded my expectations in a lot of ways. From the natural beauty of Cairns to the city life in Sydney, I was able to gain valuable insights into Australian culture and develop a deeper understanding of international business.
One of my favorite memories in Cairns was the opportunity to explore the Great Barrier Reef. Visiting and seeing the Great Barrier Reef in person was truly an experience. In Sydney, I was able to see the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Besides sightseeing, I appreciated the chance to talk with locals and try authentic Australian cuisines like their seafood.
During my time abroad I gained insights into Australian culture, particularly, in terms of business practices. Unlike in the United States, where business culture tends to be highly formal and fast-paced, I learned that Australian professionals have a more relaxed and approachable demeanor. In Australia they have a strong emphasis on work-life balance which is reflected in how people prioritize their personal well-being alongside their professional responsibilities. Also, environmental sustainability is a huge focus in Australia, especially when it comes to protecting the Great Barrier Reef. Seeing firsthand how businesses incorporate environmental responsibility into their operations was amazing and highlighted the growing global importance of sustainability.

Beyond learning about Australian culture, this experience has also taught me valuable lessons about myself. I discovered that I am adaptable, as I quickly adjusted to a new environment and culture, which helped me to step outside of my comfort zone. I also realized how much I enjoy meeting new people. Whether it was talking with classmates, networking with business professionals, or interacting with locals I found, these interactions made my experience in Australia unforgettable.
For future University of Iowa students considering studying abroad, I have some advice, which is being open to new experiences; whether it’s trying different foods, exploring new places, or meeting new people from different backgrounds. Also, time management is crucial. With classes, excursions, and free time all packed into a short period, it’s important to balance academic responsibilities with exploring a new place. Lastly, be prepared for the time difference. Adjusting to a new schedule, especially while keeping in touch with people back home, can be hard at first but it gets easier with time.
Overall, studying abroad in Australia was a transformative experience that I will always appreciate. It broadened my understanding of international business, strengthened my adaptability and confidence, and allowed me to appreciate a new culture in ways I never expected. This journey has given me a global perspective that I plan to carry into my future career. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and I know it will have a lasting impact on me.
Thanks,
Ty Ahmed
