Join the Iowa Global Health Network (IGHN) for a forum and keynote to discuss what citizens can do about the increased threat of nuclear weapons around the world. This event will be held on Wednesday, October 23, from 5:30-7 p.m. in 1117 UCC.  

How can ordinary citizens bring about extraordinary change, as threats of nuclear weapons around the world increase? At home and abroad, global leaders making repeated threats to enhance, expand or actually deploy nuclear weapons have defused their real power, made them into just any other weapon which simultaneously makes the possibility of their use more acceptable. Panel members have an opportunity to make connections between events here at home and abroad about risks faced or misperceived by many around the world. 

Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Ramaswami Balasubramaniam
Dr. Balasubramaniam is an Indian author, public policy advocate, leadership trainer, activist, and founder of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement in Mysuru, India.

Dr. Maureen McCue
Dr. McCue is the coordinator of Physicians for Social Responsibility-IA and a physician and educator in global health and human rights.

Sunny Khan
Khan is an honors student at Cornell College, whose studies and projects focus on Pakistani development, social change, and civic engagement. He works with students in Pakistani High Schools and has won numerous awards including the prestigious Clinton Foundation Initiative.

The IGHN is an interdisciplinary group of scholars at the University of Iowa whose research and interests lie in the study of real-world health problems and challenges. The network provides opportunities for cross-disciplinary interaction, the development of new scholarly and clinical initiatives, and fosters collaboration among those interested in global health at the University of Iowa.  All UI faculty and staff are welcome to join the IGHN.
