Public tears and secrets of the heart

The European Studies Group will present a guest lecture by Professor L. Elena Delgado of Grinnell College on "Public Tears and Secrets of the Heart: Populism, Secessionism, and the Question of Democratic Excess" at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 7, in 315 Phillips Hall.  The event is free and open to the public.

L. Elena Delgado is professor of Spanish, critical theory, gender and women’s studies, and global studies, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her talk will present an analysis of the pro-independence referenda in Scotland and Catalonia and their connection with broader discussions of populism, social protest movements, and the limits of democratic representation.

This event is sponsored by UI International Programs, the European Studies Group, and Digital Bridges for Humanistic Inquiry, a collaboration between Grinnell College and the University of Iowa funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. For more information on the European Studies Group and upcoming events, visit the ESG webpage.
