Ask almost any Hawkeye who has studied abroad, and you'll probably hear the same thing: it was one of the best decisions they made in college. You don't need to have your destination picked out or even know when you want to go to start exploring. Starting early gives you more time to discover programs, find funding, and choose an experience that fits your interests, schedule, and degree requirements.
Here are seven resources every Iowa student should know about:
1. Attend the Study Abroad Fair on September 15
Explore study abroad programs and global internships, learn about scholarships and grants, and connect with study abroad advisors and students who have returned from abroad at the University of Iowa (UI) Study Abroad Fair. Plus, all fair attendees who register their attendance at the fair will be entered to win one of four $500 scholarships to study abroad.
2. Explore study abroad programs and internships
Use our program search tool or visit our Major Advising Pages to find programs that are right for you.
3. Talk with your academic advisor
Studying or interning abroad can fit into almost any academic plan. Talk with your academic advisor early to discuss timing, degree requirements, and programs that align with your goals. You can also review study abroad recommendations for your major through the Major Advising Pages.
4. Submit the Advisor Assignment survey and meet with a study abroad advisor
Submit the Advisor Assignment Survey to help our office connect you with the Study Abroad advisor who works with your academic area and interests. Your assigned advisor can help you:
- Explore programs that fit your academic goals
- Compare destinations and program types
- Discuss costs, scholarships, and funding options
- Understand application requirements and deadlines
Within one business day of submitting the survey, you'll receive an email with the name of your assigned Study Abroad advisor and instructions for scheduling an appointment.
5. Explore scholarships and funding opportunities
Last year, more than $900,000 was awarded to UI students to study, intern, or do research abroad! Explore our scholarship page to learn how you can apply for merit, need-based, and other scholarships and grants. Additionally, meet with the Office of Student Financial Aid to understand how the scholarships and grants you already receive can be applied to studying abroad.
6. Apply for your passport
Schedule an appointment at the UI Passport Acceptance Facility. Even if you're only considering studying abroad, getting a passport now can save time and stress later. Processing can take several weeks, and passports are valid for 10 years. Visit passport.uiowa.edu to learn more.
