In an era marked by disruption and declining government aid, Byrne will examine how the private sector is stepping into a larger role in global development and humanitarian response. Drawing on her 30 years of experience leading market-based initiatives across 35 countries, she will explore how innovation, adaptability, and local enterprise are redefining the future of international engagement.

“In a world defined by constant disruption, the traditional systems of global aid and development are undergoing a radical transformation,” shared Byrne. "I am excited to be back on campus to present this lecture, and offer a candid discussion on the essential private sector systems and new skillsets required for global leadership, emphasizing how engaging with complexity, building innovative systems, and embracing a culture of learning are essential for the next generation of international engagement.”

Join Byrne and International Programs to explore how the sudden 83% drop in U.S. foreign aid funding is forcing a shift in problem-solving on global issues. The lecture looks beyond previous aid models to present a clear vision of the future; one where private enterprise and local markets become the primary drivers of progress.

“Karri Goeldner Byrne embodies the spirit of Iowa’s global engagement,” said Russ Ganim, associate provost and dean of International Programs. “Her lecture will challenge us to think differently about how humanitarian work is evolving and what skills are needed to lead effectively in an increasingly complex world.”

Karri Goeldner Byrne is a senior advisor and independent consultant with experience across 35 countries, helping organizations navigate complex economic challenges in some of the world’s most demanding environments. As a senior leader with Mercy Corps and the International Rescue Committee, Byrne helped to design market analysis tools that became the gold standard for understanding market systems in humanitarian contexts. She continues to support this mission as a member of the Advisory Committee for the Markets in Crisis Community of Practice.
