From managing money to navigating housing and transportation, there’s a lot to consider when living abroad. Get practical advice from study abroad alumni on how to budget wisely, avoid hidden costs, and feel confident handling day-to-day logistics in a new country. 

Event #4: Engaging with Language and Culture Abroad

Tuesday, February 24, 2026, from 5 - 6 p.m. (CST), location Herky Room #343, Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) 

One of the most rewarding parts of study abroad is connecting with the local language and culture. In this session, learn how other students overcame language barriers, built meaningful relationships, and immersed themselves in their host communities.


“The Study Abroad Conversation Series is a hands-on opportunity for University of Iowa students to hear firsthand from peers who have studied abroad about their experiences,” said Emily Brown, senior advisor and program coordinator in UI Study Abroad. “Whether you're considering going abroad or already planning your trip, these sessions cover essential topics for studying abroad, all told from the perspective of students who have already gone abroad. It's a unique chance to get practical advice, connect with others, and broaden your horizons before you head abroad yourself.”
