Could you give us a brief synopsis of what you'll be doing with your Fulbright?
During my Fulbright year, I will be living in Germany and teaching English.
How do you envision this will influence your life/future career?
As I pursue a career in foreign policy, Fulbright’s mission of fostering cross-cultural understanding and strengthening international relationships through public diplomacy aligns closely with my goals. I expect this experience to deepen my global perspective and inform my approach to foreign policy issues. Living in Germany will also enhance my understanding of U.S.-Europe relations, particularly within the transatlantic context, which is where my interests lie.
What advice do you have for students interested in applying for a Fulbright?
Start early and talk to as many informed people as you can. There are so many knowledgeable and supportive individuals on campus who are eager to help—take advantage of their insights!
Were there experiences at Iowa that inspired you to pursue a Fulbright?
My semester abroad in Freiburg, Germany, was life-changing and sparked my interest in applying for a Fulbright. While the Black Forest hikes and delicious German sweets drew me in, it was the cross-cultural friendships that made me feel at home 4,000 miles from Iowa. Two years later, those relationships continue to show me the value of cultural exchange and the importance of multicultural dialogue.
Are there individuals you'd like to thank for their investment in this process?
Dr. Karen Wachsmuth and Sylvia Dean were incredible guides throughout the process. I’m also grateful to Ambassador Ronald McMullen and Professor Kirsten Kumpf-Baele for their instrumental support during my application. Finally, I would like to thank Professor Elizabeth Menninga for her continued mentorship and encouragement in support of my career goals. I’m deeply appreciative of the time and dedication each of these individuals gave to me and the Fulbright program.
