Jennifer Cano (BA English, English education ‘23) is the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award to Spain for 2025-26.
Hometown: Columbus Junction, Iowa
With Fulbright, I will work with schools as an English Teaching Assistant in Spain. Throughout my time there, I hope to bring my experiences as an educator to find ways to engage students in the classroom. I plan on creating a community engagement project by facilitating a creative writing workshop in English, introducing students to young adult authors. Additionally, in the workshop, I hope to include spoken word nights, gallery walk-throughs, and a student-created literary magazine.
How do you envision this will influence your life/future career?
Following my return, I plan on obtaining a master's degree in educational public policy and focusing my career on working with teachers and administrators on curriculum and instructional practices. In addition, I hope to eventually work with legislators to produce more efficient laws around education that support not only students but also teachers.
What advice do you have for students interested in applying for a Fulbright?
My advice for students is to take the opportunities that are handed to you, even if you feel as though you will not be the best option for them. Sometimes we give up before even trying, so take the risk.
Were there experiences at Iowa that inspired you to pursue a Fulbright?
Many experiences prompted me to pursue a Fulbright with the knowledge that I will gain universal skills and have a meaningful experience. One experience that inspired me to continue pursuing opportunities was my first study abroad, where I taught English as a Second Language in Costa Rica with the College of Education. In that experience, I learned so much from the people I worked with, the environment, the community, and the culture. I hope to gain similar experiences with Fulbright.
Are there individuals you'd like to thank for their investment in this process?
I would like to give thanks to my three mentors, who inspired and motivated me to always seek more opportunities. I would like to thank Erica Jennings, cooperating teacher; Angie Lamb, associate director in academic support & retention; and Amira Nash, associate director of school partnerships and global education initiatives. These three individuals have made a huge impact on my career, academic support, and life. Additionally, I would like to extend my thanks to Dr. Karen Wachsmuth and Sylvia Dean for their support throughout this whole process and for their belief in me.
