After completing his diploma in game design at a polytechnic in Singapore, Ryan Lim set his sights on studying in the U.S. With a passion for English and writing, he came to the University of Iowa to study theatre.

Choosing Iowa

The University of Iowa's renowned creative writing program, and Iowa City's designation as a UNESCO City of Literature, were the primary factors that drew Lim to enroll in 2022. Despite initial concerns about adjusting to life far from home, he found the transition smoother than expected, thanks to the instrumental support of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) and the welcoming campus community.

Campus life and involvement

Lim's experience as an international student at Iowa has been positive and rewarding. He has formed friendships with both international and local students, immersing himself in American culture while still finding comfort in the diverse food options available in Iowa City, including many Asian restaurants. For over a year, Lim has worked as an international student admissions assistant in the UI Office of Admissions. In this role, he helps prospective international students navigate the application process during their journey towards becoming a Hawkeye, drawing from his own experience.

Study abroad experience

In summer 2024, Lim embarked on a study abroad program in London, United Kingdom, organized by the UI Department of Theatre Arts. Over three weeks, he immersed himself in the vibrant world of British theatre, attending and analyzing a range of performances while exploring the city. This experience provided an opportunity to broaden his understanding of theatrical forms beyond America, particularly how London's diverse demographics are reflected in its productions. He said that the enrollment process and preparation for the program was seamless for him, thanks to an information session and guidance from his academic advisor and study abroad program advisor. Lim found the program very fruitful, with a wide range of shows included in the syllabus to broaden him knowledge of theatre. He also enjoyed his first visit to a culture he had admired for a long time.

Personal growth and acceptance

As an LGBTQIA+ individual from a conservative society, Lim has found Iowa City to be a welcoming and accepting environment. He appreciates the university's embrace of diversity and the opportunity to meet people from various backgrounds and identities.

Advice for international students

Lim encourages other international students to:

  • Reach out to ISSS for help with any questions, no matter how trivial they may seem
  • Consult academic advisors for guidance on navigating college life
  • Get involved in student organizations to connect with other international students
  • Be prepared for cold winters

Lim's journey from Singapore to Iowa City exemplifies the transformative power of international education. His experiences at Iowa have not only broadened his academic horizons but also provided him with a supportive environment to grow personally and professionally.
