Dear prospective study abroad students,

I am writing to share with you my incredible study abroad experience in London, and how it has impacted me as a Black Muslim woman. When I first arrived in London, I was greeted with a sense of excitement and nervousness. As someone who didn't often see people who looked like me back home, I was eager to immerse myself in a more diverse environment.

My identity as a Black Muslim woman influenced my study abroad experience in a profound way. I was drawn to the large Black Muslim population in London and made it a goal to connect with others who shared similar experiences and backgrounds. This led me to strike up conversations with strangers and make connections that I will cherish forever. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to take risks that I wouldn't have considered back home.

Throughout my time in London, I gained valuable insights about the host country and its culture. I was amazed by the diversity and inclusivity of the city. From the international food scene to the rich history and endless activities, London has something for everyone. I learned so much about myself during my time abroad, from overcoming unexpected challenges to embracing new experiences with an open mind.

I highly recommend London to prospective study abroad students, especially those of color who may be hesitant due to concerns about discrimination. London is a welcoming and diverse city that celebrates different cultures and backgrounds. It is a great place to immerse yourself in a new environment and make lifelong memories.

In conclusion, my study abroad experience in London has had a profound impact on me. It has shaped me into a more confident and open-minded individual, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have explored such a vibrant and diverse city. Being chosen as a Global Access Ambassador and receiving the scholarship allowed me to fully immerse myself in this amazing opportunity, and I will forever cherish the memories and connections I made during my time abroad.

I encourage all prospective study abroad students to take the leap and embark on this life-changing journey. You never know what you may discover about yourself and the world around you.

LEARN HOW YOU CAN APPLY FOR A GLOBAL ACCESS AMBASSADOR SCHOLARSHIP

The Global Access Ambassador Scholarship program provides awards to study abroad for a summer, semester, or academic year. The scholarships are intended to support students who study abroad with the intent to serve as Global Access Ambassadors upon return to the UI campus. Upon completion of the study abroad program and return to UI, award recipients are asked to submit a photo and an open letter to prospective students or suggest an alternate means of sharing with prospective students.

International Programs (IP) at the University of Iowa (UI) is committed to enriching the global experience of UI students, faculty, staff, and the general public by leading efforts to promote internationally oriented teaching, research, creative work, and community engagement.  IP provides support for international students and scholars, administers scholarships and assistance for students who study, intern, or do research abroad, and provides funding opportunities and grant-writing assistance for faculty engaged in international research.
