What prompted you to pursue this IES internship opportunity in Sydney, Australia?

I have always been interested in traveling abroad and thought the idea of interning abroad would give me a unique perspective on international business. Traveling to Australia for an extended period of time is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I was excited to have the opportunity.

Can you tell us more about this internship experience?

While interning in a new city, I had the exciting experience of navigating a new place and working in the central business district of a global city. As an accounting intern, I was responsible for lodging payroll for clients, managing accounts receivables, and organizing client files. I was able to learn new accounting software such as Xero and Salesforce and experience the nuances of running an accounting firm. I learned so much about payroll, tax, and accounting structures in Australia while working alongside amazing mentors and peers at the firm.

How has this experience impacted your future studies and career planning?

By gaining hands-on experience in the field, I am even more excited and sure of my path to continue pursuing accounting. After interning abroad, I am interested in learning more about ways to get involved in international business. I gained a greater appreciation for international travel and am even planning to study abroad this spring semester!

Can you tell us more about your study abroad plan?

After a successful internship abroad in Sydney, Australia, I am now planning to study abroad in Prague, Czechia this spring semester. I have always wanted to visit Europe and am excited for the opportunity to explore Central Europe. I plan to complete my business core classes and general education courses while in Prague. Taking classes in a foreign country will push me outside of my comfort zone and expose me to a new culture. Studying abroad is something I have always wanted to do and I am looking forward to making that dream a reality in the spring!

What advice would you give to other UI students on campus considering a study abroad program and/or an international internship?

My advice for anyone considering a study abroad program or an international internship is to just go for it! It can be scary at first to travel alone, but you will be able to meet people from around the world and end up creating lasting friendships. You may never get the chance again to spend an extended period of time abroad and immerse yourself in a new culture. Studying abroad is an incredible experience and one you won’t regret!
