"Pleats of Time - We Are Here"

"Pleats of Time – We Are Here" is a monumental project that will keep the "present" of IWP 2022 Fall Residency writers permanently here as a protest against oblivion and resistance to the irreversibility of time. Using cutting-edge technologies such as binaural recording and geo-positioning systems, writers' physicality sticks to the audience's eardrums, and the view before their eyes swells with the scent of another time. The audience will enjoy the "poetic" texture born in the pleats of time as it bends and contorts. "GeoPossession: Topos of Voices," a literary art project in Tokyo that uses the same system, will also be available on this date.

Please Note: Participants will need to bring a smartphone and earphones to experience the projects. Part of the event will take place outside. Participants are advised to dress according to the weather.

Nagae Yūki (poet, performance artist; Japan) received the 2012 Poetry and Thought Newcomer’s Award; her 2019 poetry collection Fuzai toshi [Absentee Cities] was awarded the Rekitei Prize. Her most recent project is GeoPossession, in which 3D audio recordings of writers reading from their work in specific locations around Tokyo are made available to listeners at those locations. She has performed at the Saint-Remi Museum in Reims, France, and across Japan, and is a lecturer at Nagoya University of the Arts. Her participation is made possible by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
