Critical Language Scholarship winner Ryann Hubbart to study Arabic in Jordan this summer

University of Iowa international studies and economics student Ryann Hubbart of Clinton, Iowa, has been awarded a 2022 U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study in Amman, Jordan, this summer for an intensive Arabic language program.

A letter from Ecuador

In a matter of minutes, I’ve been in Ecuador for two months. In my last – and only letter, so far – I left off with the news that I would be in the Upper Amazon by the end of that week. For a few days, we stayed outside of the provincial capital of Puyo, visiting the organization Sacha Warmi (literally: “Forest Woman” in Quechua) led by Rosa, an indigenous woman of the Canelos nation, and her French husband Didier.

‘Culinary spark’ from study abroad experience inspired UI alum Elisha Smiley to pursue career as pastry chef and instructor

As an undergraduate student at the University of Iowa, Elisha Smiley (BBA accounting ’01; MAc accounting ’02) studied abroad in Dijon, France. It was a semester filled with learning to adapt, meeting new friends, and expanding her worldview, but perhaps most impactful was the connection she made to food. This connection helped to spark a career change from accounting to that of pastry chef and instructor.

Study Abroad advisor selected as a Gilman Advisor Ambassador

Monica Ernberger, senior study abroad advisor and program coordinator at the University of Iowa, has been selected by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to serve as an inaugural Gilman Advisor Ambassador. Over the next two years, she will serve as a voice for higher education to inform and advise colleagues at diverse U.S. colleges and universities about the Benjamin A. Gilman Program International Scholarship Program.  They will share their expertise and best practices for promoting the Gilman Program and guiding students in the application process, as well as provide input to program administrators on program policies and implementation.
