Do your research

The University of Iowa puts your health and safety first when selecting, planning, and executing our sponsored international experiences. While there is a lot of research and planning done on our end, it is incumbent upon you to do your own research and planning and to complete any of the pre-departure orientations provided by the Study Abroad office and/or by program providers.

Plan for your health needs

You should review the Iowa Regents CISI Health Insurance Information.

You are also encouraged to complete the Health Preparation Guide for International Travel form with your medical practitioner. This document is intended to help you plan for your medical needs abroad. Please DO NOT turn this form in to UI Study Abroad.

Online Education Abroad Pre-Departure Orientation

You are required to complete the International Programs ICON course “Education Abroad Pre-Departure Orientation” prior to departure. This orientation is mandatory for all students going abroad under the auspices of the University of Iowa. It covers many practical matters about living overseas, such as health and safety, communication, money, goals, and much more. You will be enrolled in this course by International Programs and an email will be sent to you once enrolled. If you have questions, you can email safety-abroad@uiowa.edu.

Once you have finished the training, download this Pre-Departure checklist to use as a quick guide.

Program-Specific Orientation

In addition to the required training online, study abroad advisors will inform you of any mandatory in-person orientation sessions specific to the intended program abroad.
