Could you give me a brief synopsis of what you'll be doing with your Fulbright?
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that most commonly infect the lungs. When a person’s immune system is weakened, they are less able to defend against tuberculosis. My project examines how exposure to motorcycle emissions alters the immune system and subsequent risk of tuberculosis infection in people living in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam.
What drew you to this field of study?
I am interested in infectious diseases and pulmonology. Many people do not realize that one-third of the world’s population is infected with tuberculosis. The disease disproportionally affects resource-limited areas and historically has not been prioritized despite its global burden.
Fulbright will allow me to build on previous research experiences and establish international connections in public health as I move forward in my medical training.

What advice do you have for future students interested in applying for a Fulbright?
The study/research grants are unique in that you are able to design your own project. I would encourage you to be creative and pick a topic that you find motivating. Reach out to mentors, including those outside of your field of study, and be open to feedback to help refine ideas.
