Attendance at Immigration Orientation is Required!

All F-1 students are required to attend two sessions related to immigration during orientation. The first is a presentation from ISSS called Immigration and Other Regulations, the second is the Immigration Document Verification.

The Immigration and Other Regulations session will provide you information on immigration and other legal responsibilities and benefits you have as an international student. This is a mandatory session; attendance is required for the entire presentation – attendance will be taken. It is recommended that you bring your passport, I-20 form, I-94, and any other immigration documents with you.

During Immigration Document Verification, you will bring your passport, I-20 form, I-94, and any other immigration documents to meet individually with an ISSS advisor.  The ISSS advisor will ensure that all of your documents are in order and will be able to answer some questions you may have.

Before you attend the Immigration Document Verification, it is important that you complete the iHawk Pre-arrival Checklist.

Immigration Orientations are scheduled two times each month.  You will receive the date of your session during your required ISSS check-in.  You are required to attend an orientation session on J-1 immigration issues.  Until you have attended this session, your check-in process at the University of Iowa is not complete.

What to Bring to Orientation Check-in

  • Your passport
  • Your DS-2019
  • Form I-94 (the small white card you completed when you entered the United States)
  • A pen or pencil

You must be present for the entire session, so please be sure to arrive a few minutes before the scheduled start time.   If you arrive late you may be required to return for a later program.  Your host faculty member is invited to attend this session with you, and if you wish to bring someone to translate you are welcome to do so.

If you cannot attend your scheduled immigration orientation session, you must contact International Student and Scholar Services (319-335-0335) before your program.  We will reschedule you for the next session.  If you fail to attend an Immigration Orientation Session, you will not have met all the requirements for participating in the University of Iowa’s Exchange Visitor Program, and your program may be terminated early.
