The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad, including in-person academic and internship programs, and the countries and regions where they go by offering scholarships to those who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. Awards range from $100 to $5,000 for a semester or academic year (average scholarship $2,000); summer; winter (average scholarship $1,500). There is no minimum length requirement.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program website provides details for students who wish to submit applications for this scholarship. All applicants will find extremely helpful information on this website including eligibility requirements, program statistics, the application process, guidelines for submission of essays, selection criteria, and many additional resources. Applicants are encouraged to review the website to fully prepare submissions for this scholarship application. The Gilman Scholarship is administered by IIE, not through the University of Iowa. However, the Study Abroad office conducts Gilman Scholarship Information Sessions for students who wish to learn more about this process. These sessions are held to provide information about the application process; all students are welcome to attend whether planning to apply for the current application session or are thinking about studying abroad in future sessions.

A Morse-Gilman Application Scholarship

University of Iowa students who complete and submit the Gilman application before the published deadline may be eligible to receive the A Morse Gilman Applicant Scholarship of $1,000. There is no additional application for this award; students will be notified following submission and advisor certification. The receipt of this scholarship is not associated with, nor dependent, on the award decision of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (determined by IIE.org). This award will be valid only for participation in UI-approved Study Abroad programs, non-renewable, and students may receive the A Morse Gilman Applicant Scholarship only once, though students can apply for the Gilman Scholarship more than once, until receiving the scholarship.

Out of thousands of applicants nationwide, 10 students from the University of Iowa (UI), all hailing from hometowns in Iowa, have been granted a prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which awards the recipient up to $5,000 to study abroad.
