The Academic Year in Freiburg (AYF) program is now accepting applications for Spring 2022!

UI students who are interested in studying abroad in Germany are invited to attend an information session on The Academic Year in Freiburg program, on Thursday, November 8, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in 315 Phillips Hall. 

UI students who are interested in studying abroad in Germany for the summer, fall, or academic year are invited to attend an information session on the Dortmund Exchange program in Germany on Friday, February 3, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in 315 Phillips Hall. 

On October 27 & 29, 2016, International Programs and the German Historical Institute will host two keynote addresses from Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Lecturer Maiken Umbach, professor and chair of history from the University of Nottingham.

Interested in applying for grants through the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service)? Associate Director of International Fellowships Karen Wachsmuth will be offering an information session on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in International Commons, 1117 University Capitol Centre.  The workshop will provide an overview of the types of grants offered and the application process. 

Lauren Darby has long had a deep passion for helping others, which led to her love of teaching. Now, she has the opportunity of a lifetime — to teach English to students in Germany as a Fulbright scholar.

Patrick S. Brown, a Ph.D. candidate in film studies at the UI, is the winner of a 2016-17 Research grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Lauren Darby, a UI graduate with an M.A. in social studies education, is the winner of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship grant to Germany for 2016-17.

Noaquia Callahan, a Ph.D. candidate in history at the University of Iowa, is one of 13 Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant winners from the UI for 2016-17. Noaquia will undertake research on the development of interracial collaboration between African-American civil rights leader Mary Church Terrell and German women activists from 1888-1922 at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Heidelberg. As part of her community engagement, Noaquia will work with the German-American Fulbright Commission's Diversity Initiative to prepare Turkish, Afro-German, Muslim, and other students for study abroad in the U.S.

Ben Mauk is a 2012 graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop who earned a Fulbright Study/Research Grant to Germany. In this article, Mauk reflects upon on the work of fellow UI alum, Patrick Reed, who graduated with a Master in Fine Arts in papermaking and bookbinding from the UI Center for the Book in 2013 and also earned a Fulbright Research/Study Grant to Germany.

“Tell me about a time when you were faced with a difficult situation and how you resolved it,” an interviewer might ask you. Or perhaps, “Give me an example of a moment when you were thrown out of your comfort zone and how you dealt with it.” These questions can be daunting for even the most qualified job applicant. But the truth is, your interviewer is probably expecting some pretty stereotypical answers: You took a difficult class outside of your major and, by some force of will, ended up getting a decent grade. You took part in a group project that you essentially had to complete on your own because your partners were lazy. Yawn. This isn’t going to help you stand out. But, studies show that a study abroad experience might. Not only will a story about tackling the language barrier during your time in Spain have your interviewer going from apathetic to absorbed – it can also showcase all the skills that make a study abroad experience truly valuable.

Patrick Reed graduated with a Master in Fine Arts in papermaking and bookbinding from the UI Center for the Book in 2013. He received a Fulbright grant in 2014 to the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, for his project “Apocalyptic Themes of Natural Disaster in 16th and 21st Century Woodcut Prints.” He is currently back in Germany continuing his research through a DAAD Study Scholarship and Research Grant. International Programs interviewed Patrick to get his insights on living abroad, and how the experience affected his research.
