New time, new location!

Season eight of the television, radio, and internet program WorldCanvass will begin on Tuesday, September 13, at 7:30 p.m., in the newly-opened Voxman Music Building in downtown Iowa City. WorldCanvass guests will join host Joan Kjaer to discuss the controversial method of energy production known as fracking and its impact on the environment, social dynamics, and the economy. We’ll also explore through music, photography, and literature ways in which artists have documented transitions and grappled with the drumbeat of change. The public is invited to attend and no tickets are required. 

University of Iowa's King Sejong Institute invites you to attend an upcoming music series intended to serve as an introduction to traditional Korean music. Featuring visiting scholar Eunjin Cho, a senior student at the Korea National University of Arts, classes will take place every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday evening, starting Wednesday, June 1, 2016 through Friday, July 29, 2016 in room 200 CC (Communications Center 116 Madison St.). 

What better way to kick off the weekend than with a little traditional Chinese culture? Join us for a night of beautiful Chinese folk songs, classic excerpts from Beijing Opera and Sichuan Opera, a Chinese magician and more as the Confucius Institute presents “Amazing China”!

On March 10, 2015, the African Studies Program, a constituent program of University of Iowa International Programs, hosted a reception for musicians of The Nile Project. The Nile Project is a collective of musicians from the eleven countries through which the Nile River flows in Eastern and North Eastern Africa.

For 15 years, Ukrainian musician Roman Turovsky has playing the music that settled deep in his heart many years before. Though initially compelled to remain in the shadows as a composer, Turovsky later sought the adrenaline of performance. At 7 p.m. March 15 at the Englert Theater, 221 E. Washington St., Turovsky will make his first appearance at the ninth-annual Russian Guitar Festival alongside other virtuosos in Russian guitar music. This will mark the second time for the Englert to host the event.

Hunter Sharpless, originally from Dallas, TX, graduated from the University of Iowa in 2012 with a degree in English Literature. While at the UI, Hunter studied abroad on the USAC program in Turin, Italy, in 2011. Currently, he is an MFA candidate in nonfiction writing as well as a teaching assistant at the University of Minnesota. A week-long workshop and community series on the Carnatic music of southern India will culminate in a concert March 8 at 5:00 p.m. at the Englert Theatre. Sarva Sree Foundation (SSF) will present Exotic Voice of South India, a Carnatic (South Indian) classical music (vocal & instrumental) concert led by professional musicians from USA and India.
