The 7th annual Charles A. Hale Lecture will be held Thursday, Oct. 12, from 3:30 - 5 p.m. in 1117 UCC for the lecture "Pardos, Mulattos, and the Purchase of Whiteness in the Spanish Indies." 

Mary Louise Pratt will deliver the 6th annual Charles A. Hale Lecture, "Linked In, Left Out, Uplifted, Downloaded: The ecology of language in a globalizing world," this Thursday, Oct. 29, from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in 1117 UCC.

It was impossible to get lost. The address of the archives was clear on the website: monumental area, next to the cathedral. It was not my first time in Cuenca, but I did not know how long it would take me walking from downtown, where my hostel was. I left two hours before the archives opened to make sure I would take full advantage of the four hours a day the archive is open.

Now that the first step toward restoring the historical ties between the U.S. and Cuba has been taken, Americans are, once again, eager to experience Cuba. I would like to share a unique travel opportunity with the people of Iowa, and invite them on a trip that ties together my personal history, the island’s natural beauty, and the warmth, humor, and hospitality that characterizes our people. In another welcome turn of fate, Citizens Ambassadors Program in Washington state has invited me to lead a People-to-People delegation in early December 2015 (December 4-13).

A group of about 20 students arrived at the Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí in Havana close to midnight on Sunday, December 28th. That very next morning, classes started for the January, 2015 USAC Cuba program. Despite the late arrival and few hours of sleep, students were eager to climb up the marble staircase at Casa Africa in Old Havana for the first day of class. As a visiting professor, I, too, felt the rush of excitement that comes from that first meeting with students.
