About the Donor

Dr. Margaret Fox (PhD physical education '49) established the Dr. Margaret Fox Presidential Scholarship for Study Abroad in 2005. Fox was an avid traveler who developed an appreciation of new cultures due in part to her mother, who ran a boarding house in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during Fox's childhood. Among her mother's first tenants were students from China, an experience that left a lasting impression on her. Fox earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota and a masters degree from Columbia University before completing a PhD at Iowa, later describing Iowa as "ahead of its time." She joined the University of Iowa faculty in 1949, where she taught physical education, anatomy, and kinesiology for 32 years. She traveled to every continent over the course of 20 years, and created this scholarship so students could experience the benefits of a global education.

“Each time I left [the United States], I came back a better American. Both better appreciating and understanding who we are as a people, and more aware of the richness of other cultures-and the ways in which they contribute to our own.”

- Dr. Margaret Fox
