Name: Katherine Will
Hometown: Des Moines
Type of Fulbright Award: Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Award
Degree and Field of Study: B.A., Spanish, English, 2017
Research/Teaching: I will work as a language-learning assistant in a teacher training college in Argentina, working with undergraduate students pursing teaching degrees.
What drew you to this field of study? I originally chose to study Spanish out of literary interests. I was introduced to Spanish literature through my English courses, and I wanted to develop my writing in both languages. I believe that an understanding of language is necessary in order to build empathy and communicate effectively with those of different backgrounds.
How do you envision this will change your life? Engaging with a cultural community outside of my own will help me understand alternate teaching methodologies, world views, modes of expression. I intend to pursue a Master's degree in foreign language education after I return home, and my time teaching in Argentina will help me promote an appreciation for language and dialect diversity in my classes.
What advice do you have for future students interested in pursuing a Fulbright award? Make sure you choose a country based on your own personal interests. It is necessary that you have a depth of knowledge on the country you choose, whether that is based on family connections, study abroad experiences, or personal research.
