For the winter and spring 2026 academic sessions, Study Abroad at the University of Iowa awarded over 40 merit-based scholarships for students completing study or intern abroad programs. Congratulations to all of the recipients; you can read about some of them below!


The Carol A. Snodgrass Scholarship provides scholarships for undergraduate students in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who are studying abroad in Latin America or Spain.

  • Megan Heldt, a senior triple majoring in international studies, translation, and French; minoring in Spanish; and a member of the honors program, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the USAC Heredia program in Costa Rica.
  • Meaghan Krier, a junior majoring in biology with a Spanish minor, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the USAC Heredia program in Costa Rica.
  • Abigail Wharton, a junior majoring in environmental policy & planning with a Spanish minor and a sustainability certificate, and a member of the honors program, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the USAC Montevideo program in Uruguay.

 
The International Student Study Abroad Scholarship is open to international students enrolled at the University of Iowa who are participating in an approved study abroad program.

  • One student was awarded to study abroad in spring 2026 in the Netherlands.

 
The Joel D. and Sandra Barkan Scholarship is awarded to students who study abroad in non-Western European geographical areas. Destinations include countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa.

  • Grace Koziol, a senior majoring in environmental policy & planning with minors in environmental science and geographic information systems (GIS), and a member of the honors program, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the CIEE Monteverde Open Campus program in Costa Rica.

 
The Stuart A. Lundquist Memorial Fund Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student who is majoring in French (first preference) or English (second preference) and studying abroad in France for at least one semester.

  • Sydney Proctor, a sophomore double majoring in international relations and French with a human rights interest, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the USAC Lyon program in France.

 
The Stanley Merit-Based Scholarship is a competitive, merit-based scholarship designed for undergraduate students who will study abroad.

  • Ashton Carmer, a senior double majoring in marketing and finance with a minor in sport and recreation management, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the International Business in Sydney program in Australia.
  • Rebecca Conrad, a junior double majoring in social work and Spanish, and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the Women’s Empowerment in the Dominican Republic program.
  • Emony Dickinson, a sophomore double majoring in English and history, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the Writing Greece program.
  • Tyree Gardner, a senior majoring in finance, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the International Business in London program in the United Kingdom.
  • Robert Goodin, a junior double majoring in economics and English with a rhetoric and persuasion minor, and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the CIEE January in Tokyo program in Japan.
  • Jacob Heald, a junior double majoring in accounting and finance, and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the International Business in London program in the United Kingdom.
  • Aspen Heckethorn, a junior majoring in industrial engineering, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the CIEE January in Tokyo program in Japan.
  • Eric Jensen, a senior majoring in finance with a Spanish minor, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the USAC Alicante program in Spain.
  • Abigail Michels, a junior triple majoring in management, finance, and business analytics & information systems, and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the International Business in Sydney program in Australia.
  • Isabella Nelson, a junior double majoring in accounting and finance, and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the International Business in London program in the United Kingdom.
  • Alexandra Poppen, a junior double majoring in management and finance, and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the International Business in Sydney program in Australia.
  • Anna Van Roekel, a senior triple majoring in accounting, business analytics & information systems, and risk management & insurance, and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the International Business in London program in the United Kingdom.
  • Kalleigh Young, a senior majoring in English and creative writing with minors in gender, women’s, and sexuality studies, and art history, and a member of the honors program, studied abroad in winter 2026 on the Writing Greece program.
  • Leo Aschenbrenner, a sophomore majoring in earth and environmental sciences with a biology minor, and a member of the honors program, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the USAC Viterbo program in Italy.
  • Ian Hopkins, a junior double majoring in finance and accounting (corporate) with an international business interest, and a member of the honors program, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the Wells in Florence: Lorenzo de’ Medici program in Italy.
  • Ella Knickerbocker, a junior double majoring in speech & hearing science and English & creative writing, and a member of the honors program, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the Iowa Regents in Scotland: University of Edinburgh program in the United Kingdom.
  • Lauryn Olson, a sophomore majoring in nursing, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the CEA CAPA Florence: Study in Florence program in Italy.
  • Maya Peterson, a junior majoring in communication studies with certificates in event management and non-profit leadership & philanthropy, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the IES Barcelona program in Spain.
  • Allison Stanislawski, a senior majoring in management with an event management certificate, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the USAC Bilbao program in Spain.
  • Natalie Thomas, a senior majoring in international studies, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the IES Rome program in Italy.
  • Abigail Wharton, a junior majoring in environmental policy & planning with a Spanish minor and a sustainability certificate, and a member of the honors program, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the USAC Montevideo program in Uruguay.

 
The Dr. Margaret G. Fox Scholarship is awarded to select undergraduates who intend to study abroad during their sophomore, junior, or senior year. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and plan to return to the University of Iowa for at least one semester.

  • Mailliw Figueroa Alvarado, a senior majoring in international relations with a business administration minor and interests in international business and human rights, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the CIMBA program in Italy.
  • Josie Kramer, a junior triple majoring in education studies & human relations, psychology, and international studies, with a Spanish minor, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the CIEE Seville Liberal Arts program in Spain.
  • Anastasia Lauer, a sophomore double majoring in English & creative writing and sustainability, and a Spanish minor, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the WorldStrides Victoria University of Wellington program in New Zealand.
  • Rylee Lueken, a senior double majoring in finance and business analytics & information systems with a philosophy minor, and a member of the honors program, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the USAC Verona program in Italy.
  • Charles Moretta, a junior majoring in finance with a Spanish minor, an international business interest, and a member of the honors program, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the USAC Bilbao program in Spain.

 
The R&MJ Stanley Scholarship was established in 2001 by Richard (MS '63) and Mary Jo Stanley. The fund supports undergraduate study abroad students.

  • Amelia Bryant, a junior double majoring in elementary education and Spanish, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the CIEE Seville Advanced Liberal Arts program in Spain.
  • Lucy Dunning, a junior double majoring in Spanish and religious studies, with a music minor, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the USAC San Sebastián program in Spain.
  • Elizabeth Edwards, a junior majoring in nursing with minors in gender, women’s, and sexuality studies, and art history, and a member of the honors program, is studying abroad in spring 2026 on the Community, Public Health, and Gerontological Nursing Practicum program in the Netherlands.

International Programs (IP) at the University of Iowa (UI) is committed to enriching the global experience of UI students, faculty, staff, and the general public by leading efforts to promote internationally oriented teaching, research, creative work, and community engagement.  IP provides support for international students and scholars, administers scholarships and assistance for students who study, intern, or do research abroad, and provides funding opportunities and grant-writing assistance for faculty engaged in international research. IP shares their stories through various media, and by hosting multiple public engagement activities each year.
