Nicholas Grandstaff, who will receive a BBA in economics from the University of Iowa this May, is the winner of a 2019-20 Fulbright Study/Research Award to Netherlands for a graduate degree

Could you give me a brief synopsis of what you'll be doing with your Fulbright?

For my Fulbright year, I will be attending Wageningen University in the Netherlands to study in their top-ranked international development master's program while learning about the technology surrounding the advanced Dutch food system. 

What drew you to this field of study?

Growing up and working on a farm, I have always had a great appreciation and understanding of what it takes to produce food.  International development can't happen without food security, so I have found my niche in applying my agricultural background and field of study towards understanding food systems.  

How do you envision this will influence your future career?

The Fulbright grant will provide me with additional training in development research that will ensure I have a solid foundation in development before pursuing a career with the International Food Policy Research Institute, the Food and Agriculture Organization, or a similar food and agriculture-centered research organization. 

What advice do you have for future students interested in applying for a Fulbright?

Plan early, prepare thoroughly, ask questions, find good mentors, and, most of all, get into contact with the UI International Programs office soon.  Though not necessarily in that order. 

Are there individuals you'd like to thank for their investment in this process?

Principally, I couldn't have done any of this without the help of Karen Wachsmuth and the UI International Programs office.  Additionally, I am indebted a great deal to Professor Anne Villamil, Professor Philip Lutgendorf, the entire World Food Prize, and Matthew Heinze for their feedback and guidance along the way.
