What drew you to this field of study?
I have always been interested in the sciences. During high school, I had a very influential science teacher who encouraged me to continue studying the living world around us. I also am very passionate about the Earth and how we can live more sustainable, healthy lives.
How do you envision this will influence your future career?
My Fulbright experience will influence my pathway after college by giving me time to explore all of the different options that are out there. Being immersed in a different culture will allow me to gain a greater understanding of how similar [environmental] problems can be solved in different ways. I hope to talk and connect with intelligent thinkers from other parts of the world and gain more experience teaching and working with children.
What experiences at the UI inspired you to pursue a Fulbright?
During my first semester at the University of Iowa, my Spanish teacher recommended me to apply for a Fulbright. From there, I kept in contact with International Programs and worked to gain relevant experiences. All of my time spent with the Spanish department here inspired me to apply and have a chance to not only see another culture but to be there for a productive reason.
Are there individuals you'd like to thank for their investment in this process?
Applying for a Fulbright is a process. I would like to thank my recommenders, Christine Shea, Kyle Fowler, and Mike Smith. Karen Wachsmuth and Marie Synofzick also helped me extensively with the writing and application process, and I thank them for hosting numerous writing sessions and workshops.
