The Food Studies Group (FSG), a promising new initiative supported by International Programs (IP), will host its first event with IP, Food Around the World, on Wednesday, November 19, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Culture Bites Cafe, room 120 of Phillips Hall. Free and open to all students, this event invites attendees to explore global cultures through one of our greatest connectors—food.

Faculty speakers will share insights on the cultural significance of food in different parts of the world, offering students an opportunity to expand their global awareness while enjoying a variety of food samples. The event also coincides with International Education Month, celebrating international perspectives from all across campus.

“We’re thrilled to launch our first event as the Food Studies Group,” shared Ari Ariel, associate professor of instruction in history, director of international studies, and the founding director of the Food Studies Group. “Food is a powerful lens for understanding culture and history. We hope this gathering sparks curiosity and conversation about the global connections we share through what we eat.”

FSG brings together faculty, students, and staff interested in exploring the intersections of food, culture, and globalization.

“We are pleased to promote the work of the Food Studies Group,” shared Russ Ganim, associate provost and dean of International Programs. “Their work highlights how something as universal as food can deepen our understanding of different cultures and international engagement. We’re excited to see how this group grows and contributes to our global mission at Iowa.”

The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies and International Studies within the Department of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures.
