The South Asian Studies Program will present a lecture by University of Iowa professors Dr. William Story and Dr. Kelly Baker entitled "Infants, Mothers, and Water" on Thursday, September 13, from 4:30-6 p.m. in UCC 2390 (Executive Boardroom).  This event is free and open to the public.

This talk will with address the impact of social capital, harassment of women and girls, and water and sanitation access on premature birth and low infant birth weight in India.

Dr. William Story has worked over 15 years in global public health focused on maternal, newborn, and child health in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health at the University of Iowa’s College of Public Health. He studies household and community-level factors critical to the improvement of maternal and child health in resource-poor countries and translates that research into effective interventions and policies. He uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to examine community-based interventions related to male engagement and strengthening social capital.

Dr. Kelly Baker is an assistant professor in occupational and environmental health, and epidemiology at the University of Iowa’s College of Public Health, as well as a faculty member of the Sustainable Water Development Program in the College of Engineering. Her research explores how unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions affect maternal and child health outcomes in low and middle-income countries across Asia and Africa, and in Haiti, followed by design and evaluation of interventions to prevent adverse health outcomes.  She serves on the Board of Global Health for the National Academy of Medicine Engineering and Science and is an advisor to the World Bank, World Health Organization, and UNICEF on global health policy and practice.
