UI International Programs and the African Studies Program invite you to attend an upcoming event titled "Claiming Land: Institutions, Narratives, and Political Violence in Kenya." This event will take place on Tuesday, March 7, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in 2520D University Capitol Centre.

The discussion will consider how the distribution and control of land and property shape the patterns and organization of election violence in multiparty Kenya. Variation in the distribution of land rights provides a powerful lens for explaining the dynamics of electoral violence, affecting both strategies of elite-led mobilization, and individual decisions to participate in violence. 

Guest speaker Kathleen Klaus (Ph.D., UW-Madison) is a postdoctoral fellow at the Buffett Institute for Global Studies, Northwestern University, 2015-2017. Her research focuses on land rights, violence, and post-conflict politics in Africa, with a focus on Kenya. Her work has been published or is forthcoming at the Journal of Peace Research and the African Studies Review. She is currently working on a book manuscript on land rights and electoral violence in Kenya.
