Scholar Housing

International Student and Scholar Services is pleased to offer housing reserved for scholars beginning Fall 2015.  We will have a limited number of units available. Once we receive your application, we will review whether any units are unoccupied and reply with a message indicating that your application has been accepted, wait listed, or (if no units are available) denied.

Scholar housing will be located at Hawkeye Drive Apartments located on the west side of campus in Iowa City.
The best way to get around campus is to use Cambus, the university's free bus system. Three different routes serve Hawkeye Drive: Hawkeye-Interdorm, Hawkeye Hospital, and Hawk Lot/Hospital & Hawkeye Express.
See bus route schedules.

Each apartment has two bedrooms and is equipped with an electric stove, refrigerator, window air conditioner, double kitchen sink with a disposal. Smoking is prohibited in all apartments. The cost is $412.5 per bedroom, per month. See the unit floor plan.

Single scholars may rent one bedroom and share common areas with another scholar.

Married scholars who wish to live with their spouse must rent the entire unit for $825 per month.

If visiting scholars share their apartment with a spouse and/or dependent child, they will be required to rent the entire apartment.  They will not be able to share an apartment with another scholar. If the participant has a child who attends the Iowa City Community School District, the participant will be responsible to pay tuition and busing for the time they are enrolled at a public school because the University of Iowa does not pay property taxes. Tuition in 2015-16 was $6,463 per child.

Additional UI Housing resources

The University of Iowa has several short-term and off-campus housing options available for visiting scholars. These housing options are not administered by ISSS and will require a separate application process from ISSS-sponsored scholar housing.

In addition to the furnished apartments for visiting scholars, the University has some unfurnished apartments available for lease.  The lease year runs from late June 1, 2016 through June 1, 2017.  These are two bedroom apartments, but the renter will need to supply bedroom and living room furniture, plus a window air conditioner if desired.  Monthly rent for these apartments is $675/month plus some utilities.  If you have interest in these apartments or have questions, please contact Hawkeye Drive Apartments at 319-335-9199 or e-mail for more information.

Rental rates vary based on proximity to campus, number of rooms, and other features.  Utilities such as electric service are often paid in addition to rent.
